Learn to design and create ceramic art through a process that is experimental, conscious, and intuitive.

“Since everything that comes into the human mind enters through the gates of sense, man’s first reason is a reason of sense-experience. It is this that serves as a foundation for the reason of the intelligence; our first teachers in natural philosophy are our feet, hands, and eyes.” Rousseau

About firing your pottery

I normally fire student pottery in a collective manner using a large kiln. Once a quantity of work large enough to fill the kiln is complete and dry, I then fire it all together. As a result, wait time to fill the kiln and fire your pieces can reach up to two months. If you need a faster turnaround for your class pottery, please contact me to assess feasibility and cost for your timeline.

What students have to say

Photograph of Sophia Castro in hand-building pottery class at the Paulina Rizzo ceramics studio in Oaxaca

Taking a ceramic class with Paulina was an experience that opened a therapeutic pathway much larger than I had imagined.

She taught me how creating with my hands can access internal dimensions that we often cannot reach through thought alone. When working with clay, we are invited to step out of mental control and enter into contact with the body, the senses, and the pace of the process. In each session, we develop an intimate relationship with the material. In a time when we are so often disconnected from craftsmanship and direct contact with matter, this experience reconnects us with the gesture of creating, touching, and feeling. It also teaches us so much about life’s own process: we never have complete control over the final result. For me, making ceramics was an encounter—with the earth that transforms and, above all, with myself. I came to understand that creating can be a way of ordering chaos and restoring meaning to our internal experiences.
